In scripture it is recorded of a certain man who was lame for thirty eight years waiting by a pool to be healed. It is written that an angel would come down and stir the water and whom ever was first to dip in the pool would be made whole/healed of any diseaese or infirmities. Part of this mans possession was a bed which he laid on hoping each year that someone would help him into the pool when it was stirred.
The place where this man laid is his environment and his bed is a sign if him making himself comfortable. So too we can find ourselves making the best of a bad situation by becoming comfortable. Lowering our standards and expectations to match our level of dysfunction. We refer to this as settling for less because we have lost hope that things could change. It may be compared to a physical situation or a mindset. Either way we become stuck. Looking for external help in an environment where every person is wanting the same thing. This man was surrounded by many others who were suffering; who could also relate to his struggles. Jesus came to this man and asked him “Do you want to be made whole”? Like what Jesus? Is that a trick question? Dont you see the state that im in? Why would you ask that?
Jesus challenged the man with a question. The mans answer proved that he had lost hope. Instead of immediately saying yes. He instead started to justify why he has not made it into the pool all these years. He spoke of his excuses. He answered defending his limitations. Usually we make excuses to comfort ourselves when we have failed to achieve any goal. This is a common response to adapt if everyone in your environment shares a similar limitation. Remember if you argue for your limitations; you get to keep them.
If you run with wolves; you will learn how to howl. But if you fly with eagles you will soar to great heights. Beware of the company you keep. If you lie with dogs you will catch flea. You cant be with sick people and expect to be healed. If you dwell amongst dead people you will die. This man lost hope for things to change for him. Because most of whom he had surrounded himself with had also given up. This is applicable knowledge to assess all areas of our lives. We can lose hope and stay stuck in jobs, relationships, personal growth, debt when we don’t think that things could change or we dont deserve to experience better.
I dare you to reignite your hope for things to change and believe that they can. Where there is life there is hope. Take another step towards making a change. Make another move. Keep pushing forward and dont stop until you habe gotten your breakthrough. It is possible.
