As I stood still and watched hundreds of people moving around; each showing a different and unique facial expression exposing in minute detail what’s on their mind. I began to think and ask the question….what is the driving factor behind their activity? Are they driven by love for each other and for themselves? But that answer quickly gets a clear response as I witness the cold, unattentive, way in which they walk by each other and the short uncaring gestures and comments expressed. They even walk by persons they are associated; without giving a greeting because their mind and focus is so wrapped up in “things”.
So….. if we are not going about our daily lives and routine for love then what keeps us going? What gets us out the bed at cruel hours to catch a cab or bus in order to be on time for work? What keeps us looking forward to the month’s end instead of enjoying the moments of each day?
Money or the lack of it; is a major driving factor in most of our lives. The illusion and misconception that more money is the universal solution to all our problems is our greatest motivating factor; for working at jobs that we hate, for being in relationships with people we dont love; for running through life busy trying to make ends meet and for going through our daily routines like programmed robots without stopping to figure out a better way of life nor asking questions about the void that exists in our souls that seem to get worse with more activity. The idea that a large sum of money in the bank offers security, peace of mind, better relationships and a myriad of other benefits has us shackled as slaves.
By working hard from 9-5; 8-4; 2-10; 10-6, 6-2 or more than eight hours a day through an all comsuming routine just to make ends meet using money as a lazy excuse. We have unconsciously elected “money” as our Governor, ruler, master and “Dictator“. We reside ourselves to chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow which we call nest egg in order to retire “some day” (if we live that long) before doing the things we really love and desire to do. Money has had us buying into the idea of putting off our dreams until such and such amounts are acquired (saved). The pursuit of money has forced us to shack up living in undesired common law unions; or fearing the financial responsibilities of marriage and raising a family; resigned to accepting mediocre wages for unending workloads, putting up with demeaning, derogatory superiors and energy draining co-workers. It has us living to survive, praying to make it through the month – living paycheck to paycheck. It confines us geographically limiting our desire for adventure, exposure and new experiences. It gives us the choice of either sacrificing our health, family, church, time, friendships, personal growth, for an extra buck from working overtime -weekends and holidays. The latter usually suffers as money keeps us focused on achieving the “things” we desire while neglecting our very own lives and all those attached or still attached.
Money has us doing meaningless work; burned out at the end of the week without energy to invest in the important areas of our lives. The attainment of money or the lack there of is the major driving factor for crime worldwide. When ever unemployment rises in any country or area the crime level automatically increases. The major factor in making a decision for many persons is found in asking the questions:
“How much will it cost?”
“Can I afford it?”
” How will I afford it?”
How favorable the answers are determines the outcome of the decision. Even Christians who ought to be people of faith are trapped in this cycle. Most persons are not walking by faith trusting God to provide wherever they have fallen short. They don’t pray to God for money. They pray for protection or healing but rarely pray for money. Like everyone else they can be found in the rat race in a maze trying to find the cheese. They are like hampsters running on the wheel of life.
Yet 95% of the population are not interested in escaping this race, breaking this shackle, ending this dictatorship, dethroning this master, voting out this governor or vanquishing this terrorist out our lives. We mask our disgust and discomfort with the act of being busy. No wonder midlife crises happen and suicide rates still increase. Because we believe things cant be changed and this is how it has always been and the systems and powers that be will always have the last word.
What I have to say about all this is that 5% of the population has exited this rat race and is using the system instead of being used by it. They have mastered money. Why not you? Why not me? They know something we dont and we need to find out and apply it. If you wish to stay under the regime of moneys’ dictatorship fine. Your choice. I choose not to. Plotting my escape begins now.
